As a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm this year, Combat Aircraft takes a nostalgic look back at the last days of the popular Sea Harrier FA2. These images were taken by Combat Aircraft Consultant Editor Jamie Hunter as the Sea Harrier was retired from service.
The mighty Sea Harrier!
Going ballistic! Lt Cdr Phil Mould takes the specially painted 800NAS FA2 (callsign 'Satan 1') into the vertical. The squadron disbanded as a Sea Harrier unit in 2004. The squadron now operates alongside 801NAS as the Naval Strike Wing, flying the Harrier GR9 from Cottesmore.
899NAS was the Sea Harrier training squadron at RNAS Yeovilton. This shot shows the aircraft that was specially painted for the disbandment of the unit in 2005, alongside one of the stunning gloss black T8 trainers from the squadron.
The end of the Sea Harrier in Royal Navy service came in 2006. These images were taken as the last five 801NAS aircraft prepared for a final flypast at Yeovilton on 28 March 2006, led by Cdr Tony 'Stinger' Rae. A memorable occasion.
