In the current March edition of Combat Aircraft we look back at 30 years of Strike Eagle operations with the USAF and focus on the current operations of the 366th Fighter Wing at Mountain Home, with an exclusive interview with operations group commander Col Brian McCarthy.
The USAF recently marked the milestone of the first F-15E to hit 12,000 flight hours when serial 89-0487 of the 335th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron (EFS) at Seymour Johnson AFB became the fleet leader in terms of hours during an Operation ‘Inherent Resolve’ mission. This particular aircraft had deployed 17 times in support of combat operations, including Operations ‘Desert Shield’ and ‘Desert Storm’. The aircraft is the only USAF F-15E to have claimed an air-to-air ‘kill’ when it destroyed an Iraqi Mi-24 helicopter with a GBU-10 laser-guided bomb on February 14, 1991, during Operation ‘Desert Storm’.
‘Our jets here aren’t quite as old [as those at Seymour Johnson] but they’re getting a bit long in the tooth’, warns Col McCarthy. ‘This is my third tour here at Mountain Home and we’re as busy as ever.’
